There is nothing more disappointing than to discover a small hole in your boat when you’re ready to take it out on the lake. Aside from tainting its appearance, the hole can be dangerous and compromise your safety. Whenever you spot an imperfection like this, you should take the boat out of the water for a complete and thorough inspection before climbing aboard. If you’re handy and the damage is minimal, you may be able to quickly repair it yourself with a fiberglass repair kit.
Repairing a fiberglass boat is very labor intensive and takes about two full days to complete. You will need to first make sure you have all the necessary materials. These include scissors, pliers, acetone, fiberglass repair kit, polyvinyl alcohol, 36 grit sandpaper, catalyst, screw driver, sander, paste wax, felt roller, wax removal solvent, boatyard resin, rags, and polish.
You will need to repair your boat in a well-ventilated and dust-free environment. The next step is to carefully cut out the damaged section. Next, use a disk sander to smooth out the surface.
Now that you have a smooth surface to work with, use your fiberglass repair kit to make a patch for the hole by cutting a layer of material approximately one inch wider than the hole you are repairing. You might find it easier to make a non-adhesive backing that can be removed after patching the hole. Continue patching the hole with several layers of fiberglass material with each layer narrower than the previous one. Once you finish filling the hole with layers of fiberglass material, mix the boatyard resin with around 2% catalyst solution, and then apply the mixture to the repair section. Allow time to for the bonding to set. Once bonded, remove the backing material and polish the repaired area.
